Garissa County unveils plan to build a 300-bed mother and child hospital

Garissa County is set to unveil the construction of a Mother and Child hospital with a 300-bed capacity at the Garissa Referral Hospital. Governor Nathif Jama made the announcement during the Jamhuri Day celebration at Garissa Primary playground, addressing hundreds in attendance.

Governor Nathif Jama made the announcement during the Jamhuri Day celebration at Garissa Primary playground, addressing hundreds in attendance. He mentioned that his administration had allocated funds for the construction of this vital healthcare facility.

Governor Jama highlighted that the new hospital aims to reduce child and maternal mortality rates continuously, aligning with national targets. The facility's construction is expected to address congestion issues at the existing maternity facility once completed.

Additionally, Governor Jama highlighted ongoing renovations at several level 4 hospitals in sub-counties, including Balambala, Modagashe, Masalani, Dadaab, and Bura. To enhance the efficiency of primary healthcare services in the sub-counties, the county government has established Primary Care Networks.

In the water sector, the governor outlined plans to execute various rural water activities, such as the initiation of the 45-kilometer Madogashe water project and the extension of Danyere and Maalimin water projects. He noted that the El Nino rains had impacted several boreholes and dams, necessitating immediate rehabilitation and desilting.

Governor Jama also unveiled ambitious plans for economic development, including the creation of a tomato processing plant, hides and skin factory, and a rice processing plant. To empower youth and women, the governor disclosed that 40 million shillings had been allocated for business development funds, providing beneficiaries with access to fully Sharia-compliant loans.
